Fabulous February for fashion retailers

The fashion sector of the retail industry reported strong like-for-like sales in February, according to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker.

Like-for-like fashion retail sales in February were up by 10.7 per cent when compared to the same month last year, new research shows.

According to the BDO High Street Sales Tracker, this represented record growth and was fuelled by demand for winter clothing to deal with freezing conditions across the UK. Footwear sales were also strong over the course of the month.

Up until now most retail industry sales monitors have suggested the cold weather has had a negative effect on the high street, with many people opting to stay indoors rather than hit the shops - but it appears to have boosted clothing retailers.

Meanwhile, overall like-for-like retail sales in February were up by 9.1 per cent on February 2009, while sales through non-store channels like the internet inflated by a whopping 46.1 per cent.

BDO’s Head of Retail Don Williams remarked: “These encouraging results show that the supposed “big fall” is not manifesting itself on the high street."

He added that retailers, particularly those in the fashion sector, have “done well” not to drive customers away by not taking risks with their product ranges and choosing items they know people want to purchase.
