E-tail boosts retail industry during recession
Online retail performed well during the recession and the sector helped boost the retail industry during a tough period.
E-tail had a strong fourth quarter of 2009 and remained relatively buoyant during the recession in general, according to new research.
Independent market analyst Datamonitor indicates that e-tailers competed “aggressively” for a share of the Christmas shopper market, encouraging many consumers to make their festive purchases online with deals and offers of free delivery.
And the success of web-based retail has rubbed off on other areas of the workforce.
Datamonitor said: “Online retail is offering the express market a much-needed lifeline as it crawls out of the hole it has found itself in since the onset of the global economic recession.”
The most recent IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index also shows healthy online shopping figures for the end of 2009.
UK shoppers spent £5.46 billion online during December, which was 17 per cent more than the same month one year before.
