Sainsbury’s launches first supermarket bakery college

Sainsbury’s has teamed up with flour supplier Whitworth to launch a new bakery college in Wellingborough.

The first ever supermarket bakery college is being launched by grocery giant Sainsbury’s.

Based in Wellingborough, the institution has been created in partnership with flour supplier Whitworth and will allow the firm to train its bakers in double quick time.

Members of staff who enroll at the college will study for NVQs and have the chance to qualify in six months, rather than the year it currently takes for students to gain the qualification.

Chief Executive of Sainsbury’s Justin King laid out the plans at today’s (March 10th) IGD Food & Grocery Industry Skills & Employment Summit, which attracted various retail industry delegates and included speeches from Asda’s Andy Clarke, Lucy Neville-Rolfe from Tesco and Dave Lewis of fast moving consumer goods firm Unilever.

Reflecting on the new initiative, Mr King said: “This is just one of many initiatives through which we provide our colleagues with skills and training.

“We believe that the investment in our bakery colleagues will enable them to continue to deliver the fantastic quality and high level of customer service our shoppers expect.”
